General Session Speakers - September 26th & 27th

 

Linda Diamond –Consortium on Reading Excellence (CORE) CEO and one of the original founders of CORE.  Ms. Diamond has both Elementary and Middle School Education Professional backgrounds: serving as teacher and principal in each setting.  She hasserved on the California State Superintendent’s Task Force on Reading and was co-author of Building a Powerful Reading Program, which helped establish the foundation for reading policy andlegislation in California . In addition Ms. Diamond has co-authored CORE Assessing Reading: Multiple Measures and the nationally acclaimed CORE Teaching Reading Sourcebook and most recently the Vocabulary Handbook.

 

Laura Robb –Author, teacher, and coach, Laura Robb has been an educator for 43 years. She currently serves as Literacy Coach to Powhatan Schools in Boyce, Virginia , where she coaches teachers in grades K-8. She has written 14 books for teachers- her most recent titles include: Nonfiction Writing From the Inside Out and Teaching Reading in Middle School.

 

Linda Gambrell –2007-2008 IRA President, Professor of Education in the Eugene T. Moore School of Education at Clemson University , Clemson, South Carolina . Linda received the IRA Outstanding Teacher Educator Award and in 2004 was elected to the Reading Hall of Fame. She has written books on reading instruction and published articles in journals such as Reading Research Quarterly The Reading Teacher, andThe Journal of Educational Research.

 

Richard Allington –Former IRA President, Dr. Allington is a professor of Education at the University of Tennessee . His publications include over 100 articles, chapters, monographs and books. Dr. Allington is a noted national speaker and member of the Reading Hall of Fame. Among his recent publications are: What Really Matters for Struggling Readers and Big Brother and the National Reading Curriculum.

 

Taffy RaphaelTaffy is a professor in Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Illinois , Language and Literacy Education. She is a 2007-2008 IRA Board Member; who has researched and published on various aspects of literacy teaching and learning, including inquiry and conversational learning methods. Taffy has done extensive work with Professional Learning Communities (PLC s) in Chicago ’s Urban Schools.

Janet Allen – A renowned international, literacy consultant and author of numerous literacy works including: Words, Words, Words; Reading History; The Scholastic Read Aloud Anthology and It’s Never Too Late, Dr. Allen currently serves as Senior Program Consultant for McDougal Littell’s 2008 Literature Program (grades 6-12).

 

Freddy Hiebert – is currently an Adjunct Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, she has worked in the field of early reading acquisition for 35 years and has published over 130 research articles and chapters on how instructional and assessment practices influence literacy acquisition, especially among low-income children.

 

Valerie Ellery Author of International Reading Association’s Creating Strategic Readers , which is organized around the five essential components of reading instruction, Valerie is a National Reading Consultant and experienced featured speaker.

 

Marie Bradby –Author of many books for Children and Young Adults among them: More Than Anything Else.

 

Allison Hart –Author of Gabriel’s Horses (first book in the trilogy), currently on the Bluegrass Children’s Book Award List, and various other novels for Young Adults.

 

Nancy Polette –Author of over 150 books professional books and including picture books; The Little Old Lady Who Wasn’t Afraid of Anything. Nancy is a Professor at Lindenwood University and St. Charles Community College in addition to presenting workshops at national and state conferences and school districts.

 

Jacquie McTaggart Author of From the Teacher’s Desk, shares a wealth of wisdom acquired from her 42 years experience as an educator in Iowa .

 

D. Anne Love The award-winning author of numerous novels for middle grade readers and young adults including; Semiprecious and Defying the Diva, currently on the Bluegrass Children’s Book Award List.
